Getting Silly: How to move past roadblocks through the power of absurdity

Getting silly: how to move past roadblocks through the power of absurdity

There’s something to be said for the catharsis that comes from indulging in a moment of silliness in the middle of the workday. It can often be the break that you need to have a real breakthrough. There have been a number of times when myself and my teammates have hit a wall in the middle of a project; nothing is working, none of our ideas fit together well, and trying to come up with alternatives is like pulling from a well that has long since gone dry. All we want to do is complain about how hopeless it all feels.

So, at Simply Binary, we do.

Fairly OddParents meme with Dad pointing to empty podium labelled "social media" and the text below him says "and here's where I'd put my post content" in the top panel. In the second panel Dad has moved to the center of the image and looks frustrated, text at the bottom reads "if I could think of something to write."
A common frustration of content writers, meme-ified

Memes are always the first to be incorporated into our sidetracked activities. There’s a plethora of them available and we’ll trade them back and forth like collectibles, laughing at each in turn before coming up with one that’s even more ridiculous. From there we branch out to hunting down short videos that perfectly convey our despair, drawing stick figure comics of improbable scenarios, and even telling comical anecdotes that have no relation to the issue whatsoever. Soon, the misery of our situation is lost in a sea of laughter.

It gets us collaborating where we were stagnant. It gets us talking where we were too busy spinning our gears for words. It eventually gets us out of the rut we were stuck in because our brains have switched gears to creating something of little consequence for the sake of nothing more than our own amusement. By the time we come back to the problem at hand, we’ve flexed our brain muscles and we’re ready to approach it with a new perspective.

So let this be your reminder the next time you cross paths with hitting the proverbial wall, draw graffiti or hang some memes on it instead of tiring yourself out trying to break it down. By the time you’re done with that, you’ll find the door just a little further down that you hadn’t noticed before. And if you’re still having problems, come get silly with us at hello@simplybinary.com and maybe we can help find a solution... after we laugh at a few videos first.
